As many of you know, Lydia, my wife, used to work in outdoor education. One of her jobs was taking groups of teenagers out into the National Parks on hiking trips. Some of these kids had never been out of the city before, and it was Lydia's job to guide them, to bring them back safely, and hopefully to help them learn something along the way. In that context she used a learning tool.

Lent is a good time for owning up to bad habits. In that spirit, perhaps this is a good time for me to share that I enjoy eavesdropping. I have what you might call a professional interest in my fellow human beings: I think people are fascinating, and I take what I hope is an appropriate degree of satisfaction in learning about people's quirks. I justify that to myself by saying that understanding people helps me to love them better. And there are few things that are quite as revealing of a person's quirks a

I was thinking about freedom a lot in the run-up to Christmas this year. I preached about freedom at Midnight Mass. I was forming an idea – not a terribly original idea, I'm happy to admit – that part of why God sent his Son to be with us was to make us free.

It's good to know where we're coming from. Last Sunday all of our readings were about creation, and the place of human beings within creation. We chose music that reflected those readings, and Richard spoke about our human response, especially our duty of care towards our fellow creatures.

Are you a nature lover? Since I was very young I have always enjoyed the beauties of nature. I was very lucky to grow up on the edge of the countryside and from where I lived I could look out over the Vale of Evesham towards the Cotswold Hills.

In John's Gospel Jesus says that he is the Good Shepherd. The image fits: we see Jesus doing lots of things that we would expect of a “shepherd of people”. The main example is that Jesus calls to people: he seems to know what they need, and when he calls they respond. Whenever Jesus touches a person's life we see that process of call and response. That was true during his earthly ministry, and it's still true today. It's such a ubiquitous feature of Christian life that Christians in the West even have a fan

After the Blessed Virgin Mary, St Peter and St Paul must surely be the two most important saints in the New Testament. Unlike St Peter, however, who has to share a feast with St Paul on 29th June, St Paul gets one all to himself today, to mark the day of his conversion.

Like a good Vicar, I was thinking about Christmas back in September. One Saturday morning in September, before I got out of bed, I was idly wondering what I was going to preach about at Midnight Mass this year (as you do). A few minutes later, while I was eating my breakfast, I was reading a book about freedom (again, as you do); and the author said something that caught my eye.

The discovery of a pregnancy can provoke a great variety of different reactions. There can be shock. There can be joy. There can be dismay. There can be relief. There can be unease. There can be quiet acceptance. The stories of Mary’s pregnancy in Matthew’s and Luke’s gospels portray her and Joseph experiencing all of these emotions. In Luke’s account there is initial shock, followed by joy.
