After the Blessed Virgin Mary, St Peter and St Paul must surely be the two most important saints in the New Testament. Unlike St Peter, however, who has to share a feast with St Paul on 29th June, St Paul gets one all to himself today, to mark the day of his conversion.

Have you ever had an epiphany, a moment when you suddenly feel that you understand, or suddenly become aware of, something that is very important to you?

Like a good Vicar, I was thinking about Christmas back in September. One Saturday morning in September, before I got out of bed, I was idly wondering what I was going to preach about at Midnight Mass this year (as you do). A few minutes later, while I was eating my breakfast, I was reading a book about freedom (again, as you do); and the author said something that caught my eye.

The discovery of a pregnancy can provoke a great variety of different reactions. There can be shock. There can be joy. There can be dismay. There can be relief. There can be unease. There can be quiet acceptance. The stories of Mary’s pregnancy in Matthew’s and Luke’s gospels portray her and Joseph experiencing all of these emotions. In Luke’s account there is initial shock, followed by joy.

Last Sunday we heard about John the Baptist, working and speaking at the height of his popularity. Today's Gospel reading comes from the other end of John's ministry. He is languishing in a prison cell waiting to have his head cut off by a tyrant. All he can do is smuggle a single question out to his followers on the outside.

If we've tried to live well, and if we're honest, we'll know that “bearing good fruit” is easier said than done. That's true even when all the conditions are right; and conditions feel especially difficult at the moment. What hope is there then for those of us who, like the Pharisees and Sadducees, have heard the call to change our lives, and want to do better? If we hope to be better people, what feeds our hope?

Every Friday the Pilsdon Community in West Dorset prepares for guests. Bedding is laid out in the guest rooms; extra places are set in the dining room. But the guests, when they come – if they come – are always unexpected. That's because the guests who arrive at Pilsdon on Fridays are wayfarers: men of the road, many of them homeless, but some of them just badly housed and in need of respite. Without any announcement, at any point of the day or night, they arrive on foot, or on their bikes, or sometimes by

In a nutshell, what I want to say this morning is that Christians have a problem with power, and with authority. The reason for this is straightforward; the solution is much less straightforward.

As those of you who are regular here will know, I love words. If you catch me in a playful mood, you might see me pause in conversation as I work out how to make a pun from something you've just said. As well as making puns, part of loving words, for me, is noticing how there are words we only use some of the time. It always amuses me, for example, how even urban churches will use the word “garner” several times on a single Sunday in the autumn, and then let the word slip down the back of the linguistic sof

I don't watch much real television these days; most of what I watch is old series on streaming services. But I have acquired a taste for a BBC series which is airing right now – it's called “The Celebrity Traitors”. The final is this coming week. I'm not going to give you any spoilers in case you want to watch it, but I can say that, of the five celebrities who are still left in the game, I knew who three of them were without checking wikipedia. That makes me feel quite good about my popular culture knowled
