Six months before Jesus was born, there was another special birth. Luke tells the story of Jesus' cousin: John, who would be called the Baptist. In some ways his birth was just as dramatic as Jesus' birth: a miracle, announced by angels. Part of the drama is that John's father, a priest named Zechariah, gets struck dumb by an angel; and it's only when Zechariah shows his obedience to God, that he is able to speak again.

Jesus is a truly free person, and his freedom makes him enemies. Some of these enemies are people who knew him well, or ought to have known him better: perhaps they disagreed with certain choices he had made; perhaps they were disappointed that he wasn't who they'd hoped he would be.

I began our church year here at St Mary's by talking about freedom. Back in Advent what I had in mind is the freedom that comes from being eccentric: the way that, when they are at their best, Christian people will seem to be moving in orbit around some massive invisible object, in a way that makes them unpredictable.

Each Tuesday evening in Lent a small group of us have been meeting in church to “walk the way of the Cross”. This act of worship, called the “Stations of the Cross”, is an ancient Christian contemplative practice. Essentially it's a tour of Jesus' final journey through Jerusalem. The aim is to know Jesus better, and to love him more. I also think that imagining ourselves into Jesus' suffering equips us for life in the world in ways that we can't predict.

As many of you know, Lydia, my wife, used to work in outdoor education. One of her jobs was taking groups of teenagers out into the National Parks on hiking trips. Some of these kids had never been out of the city before, and it was Lydia's job to guide them, to bring them back safely, and hopefully to help them learn something along the way. In that context she used a learning tool.

Lent is a good time for owning up to bad habits. In that spirit, perhaps this is a good time for me to share that I enjoy eavesdropping. I have what you might call a professional interest in my fellow human beings: I think people are fascinating, and I take what I hope is an appropriate degree of satisfaction in learning about people's quirks. I justify that to myself by saying that understanding people helps me to love them better. And there are few things that are quite as revealing of a person's quirks a

I was thinking about freedom a lot in the run-up to Christmas this year. I preached about freedom at Midnight Mass. I was forming an idea – not a terribly original idea, I'm happy to admit – that part of why God sent his Son to be with us was to make us free.

It's good to know where we're coming from. Last Sunday all of our readings were about creation, and the place of human beings within creation. We chose music that reflected those readings, and Richard spoke about our human response, especially our duty of care towards our fellow creatures.

Like a good Vicar, I was thinking about Christmas back in September. One Saturday morning in September, before I got out of bed, I was idly wondering what I was going to preach about at Midnight Mass this year (as you do). A few minutes later, while I was eating my breakfast, I was reading a book about freedom (again, as you do); and the author said something that caught my eye.

If we've tried to live well, and if we're honest, we'll know that “bearing good fruit” is easier said than done. That's true even when all the conditions are right; and conditions feel especially difficult at the moment. What hope is there then for those of us who, like the Pharisees and Sadducees, have heard the call to change our lives, and want to do better? If we hope to be better people, what feeds our hope?
