I’m conscious that all of us here will have experiences of being hurt. Sometimes we have felt able to forgive, and sometimes we haven’t. All of this is deeply uncomfortable. I would like to make the message today more palatable for you, and there are one or two things I can do to help; but I suspect the main thing is to make it very clear how little room there is for compromise here.

One of the many guilty pleasures of twenty-first century life is watching other people arguing on social media. Whatsapp is great for this – by which I mean, not so great. I’m part of a large and diffuse group of people who share a Whatsapp chat to keep in touch. Most of the group are Christians, which normally keeps things civilised. But the other day one member of the group managed to insult someone who they know only slightly in real life, and the insulted party took offense.

Those of you who’ve been coming here for a while will know that I like word-play, a pun or a double- meaning. Sometimes that’s fun, but sometimes the English language is unhelpful – it forces us to do a bit of extra work. One example that comes up regularly for me is the word “patient”.

I’m conscious that there are quite a few people here today who are familiar with the inner workings of Church of England schools. That might be because you attended one; it might be because you sent your children to one; you may have taught or been a governor at one of them; or maybe your experience is some combination of these things.

Institutional forms of Christianity like the Church of England have a problem. Generally speaking, the more mainstream Christianity becomes, the more reluctant it is to address the darker parts of our religious experience. With establishment comes a desire for stability, and in the interests of courting the largest possible audience we try to avoid anything that might make us seem judgemental or exclusive. So being an institution goes hand in hand with an aversion to conflict. (Christians who don’t feel lik

I recently re-watched a favourite TV series of mine on Netflix. It's called The Good Place. The premise of the show is that the main character, Eleanor, is dead. When she opens her eyes, she sees the words: “Welcome! Everything is great!” She meets a being who looks like a kindly older gentleman, who introduces himself as Michael. Michael is a sort of angelic figure who is the architect of a neighbourhood in the afterlife; and it's a good neighbourhood. Michael informs Eleanor that she doesn't need to worry

This morning I’ve decided to share something with you that makes me feel a bit vulnerable. I’m not sharing in order to get sympathy, although sympathy is always welcome; I’m sharing because I hope it will help. I hope that it helps all of us become the people God created us to be, and to worship God with our whole selves. With that aim in mind, I’d like to tell you what church music means to me.

What is righteousness? What is righteousness? I wonder whether we spend any time at all thinking about righteousness. Probably not, is the answer. I feel that in our society, we very quickly identify righteousness and self-righteousness. Righteousness and self-righteousness. We're probably quite shy of thinking about righteousness because we don't want to, we don't want to assume too much, I suppose. We don't want to overinflate our sense of value, our sense of worth.

Today is the Feast of Corpus Christi, the Celebration of the Sacrament of Christ’s Body and Blood. It’s one of several festivals that come up in our calendar which we celebrate on the day, rather than transferring them to the nearest Sunday (or just ignoring them). I enjoy making time for these feasts, and I’m glad that to be part of a community that makes time for them.

Today is Trinity Sunday. Two out of our three Bible readings this morning have been chosen to highlight the tentative steps the first Christians made towards what became the Christian doctrine of God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Unfortunately, these same texts also have the side-effect of making the doctrine of the Trinity seem like an afterthought: something that you tack on to the end of a letter, or the end of a story. These verses also make the Trinity seem like a formula, something inert and functiona
