If we've tried to live well, and if we're honest, we'll know that “bearing good fruit” is easier said than done. That's true even when all the conditions are right; and conditions feel especially difficult at the moment. What hope is there then for those of us who, like the Pharisees and Sadducees, have heard the call to change our lives, and want to do better? If we hope to be better people, what feeds our hope?

Every Friday the Pilsdon Community in West Dorset prepares for guests. Bedding is laid out in the guest rooms; extra places are set in the dining room. But the guests, when they come – if they come – are always unexpected. That's because the guests who arrive at Pilsdon on Fridays are wayfarers: men of the road, many of them homeless, but some of them just badly housed and in need of respite. Without any announcement, at any point of the day or night, they arrive on foot, or on their bikes, or sometimes by

In a nutshell, what I want to say this morning is that Christians have a problem with power, and with authority. The reason for this is straightforward; the solution is much less straightforward.

As those of you who are regular here will know, I love words. If you catch me in a playful mood, you might see me pause in conversation as I work out how to make a pun from something you've just said. As well as making puns, part of loving words, for me, is noticing how there are words we only use some of the time. It always amuses me, for example, how even urban churches will use the word “garner” several times on a single Sunday in the autumn, and then let the word slip down the back of the linguistic sof

I don't watch much real television these days; most of what I watch is old series on streaming services. But I have acquired a taste for a BBC series which is airing right now – it's called “The Celebrity Traitors”. The final is this coming week. I'm not going to give you any spoilers in case you want to watch it, but I can say that, of the five celebrities who are still left in the game, I knew who three of them were without checking wikipedia. That makes me feel quite good about my popular culture knowled

St Mary's, Dorchester. 26th October, 2025. I must admit I sometimes struggle with the way in which Jesus condemned the Pharisees as he did in this morning’s gospel. Over the years I’ve heard too many sermons – some preached by yours truly – which say, in effect, that God is more concerned with those outside the church than with those of us who go. The same problem arises with the parable of the lost sheep.

About eighteen months ago I was having a conversation with a former member of this church who has since moved away. She was commenting on the way I conduct the services. In the main she considered the way I took the services to be satisfactory but she did upbraid me for saying the creed too fast. I ventured to suggest that we could shorten it or might omit altogether. In response to this suggestion she was visibly shocked. ‘Whatever next?!’, she said, ‘you’ll be leaving out the Bible next!’.

When I take a funeral, it's often for people I didn't know. To prepare myself I meet with the closest relatives or friends of those who've died. One of the first questions I ask them is something like, “Tell me about your loved one; tell me what made them tick.” Then, either fluently or with a little bit of prompting, they give me an account of the person's likes and dislikes; their values; their work. And – very often – it is strongly emphasised to me how much purpose the person found in their work. In the

It's good to celebrate harvest. In recent years the Church of England has encouraged a change in our liturgy that makes Harvest a bit more emotionally complex. The Church has started marking the period from the beginning of September until the beginning of October as “Creationtide”. In this time we can express emotions to do with land that go beyond simple celebration. In the current climate thinking about Creation as a whole, and our place within it, naturally leads us into lament and even protest.

The idea that we should show compassion to people in our communities whose place here is marginal is not a fringe Christian position. You can't dismiss it as novel, or liberal, or woke. It is at the heart of the gospel. And who could be more marginal than a refugee?
