When I take a funeral, it's often for people I didn't know. To prepare myself I meet with the closest relatives or friends of those who've died. One of the first questions I ask them is something like, “Tell me about your loved one; tell me what made them tick.” Then, either fluently or with a little bit of prompting, they give me an account of the person's likes and dislikes; their values; their work. And – very often – it is strongly emphasised to me how much purpose the person found in their work. In the

It's good to celebrate harvest. In recent years the Church of England has encouraged a change in our liturgy that makes Harvest a bit more emotionally complex. The Church has started marking the period from the beginning of September until the beginning of October as “Creationtide”. In this time we can express emotions to do with land that go beyond simple celebration. In the current climate thinking about Creation as a whole, and our place within it, naturally leads us into lament and even protest.

The idea that we should show compassion to people in our communities whose place here is marginal is not a fringe Christian position. You can't dismiss it as novel, or liberal, or woke. It is at the heart of the gospel. And who could be more marginal than a refugee?

When I go into hospital I have a list of things I always take with me. I take my lanyard and my diary. Because I usually eat there on my hospital days, I take a packed lunch. I also like to take a book. I choose books that I hope other people will find interesting; maybe if they see me in the hospital restaurant they might want to stop and talk. For the last two weeks I've been going in with this book: it's called “Dementia: Living in the Memories of God”. The author is John Swinton; he's a practical theolo

Blessed Mary, the mother of our Lord, is pretty special. One of the ways she's special is that, whereas most Saints get one special day each year when we celebrate their life and witness, Mary gets loads. I should say that I'm a bit of a geek about this sort of thing, so I hope you will indulge me as I share a bit of Church-related geekiness...

Some of you know that earlier in my career as a priest I spent a number of years as a tutor in one of the Church’s theological colleges. These exist primarily for the preparation of men and women for ordained ministry or, as one of my more humorous colleagues puts it, they are ‘vicar factories’.

Welcome and Hospitality are important to us in this church. We welcome those who have been part of this church for years and those who are newer and finding their place in the family, as well as any here for the first time today.

One of the joys of living in a vicarage is that we have a steady stream of unexpected visitors. Sometimes they're people we know, friends who were in the area and who fancy a chat. Sometimes we get wayfarers, men and women of the road who are looking for a cup of tea, a sandwich maybe, maybe some cash. Members of the congregation here, of course, also have reason to knock on the door at different times.

Lydia went on retreat on Friday, which is our day off. Left to my own devices for the afternoon I decided to treat myself by going to the cinema. I chose a film that I knew Lydia would never want to watch anyway: in this case, the most recent film by director Danny Boyle. It's called “28 Years Later”. It's the third film in a series. I'd watched the first two films soon after they came out in the early two-thousands. I remembered them being enjoyable – if you like zombie horror films, that is. And I do.

Recently I gave blood for the first time. The donation venue was the hall at the United Church, here in Dorchester. I imagine people giving blood for the first time go through similar emotions. I felt a bit of anxiety about drinking enough fluids; there are the sensations of actual and figurative “pins and needles” that you get; and of course I didn't really want to look at the needle going in...
